The electromagnetic field effects in close vicinity of cable poles and degradation of ZnO varistors from high voltage surge arrester counters

In the October 2018 issue of the magizine Przegląd Elektrotechniczny there have been published 2 articles prepared by researchers from the Institute of Power Engineering - prof. Jacek Wańkowicz, Piotr Papliński and Hubert Śmietanka.

The paper „Effects of electromagnetic field in close vicinity of cable poles on generally accessible environment” discusses issues related to magnetic field distributions of the low frequency (50 Hz) occurring in the close vicinity of cable poles located in a generally accessible environment. The validity of their application in urban agglomerations and at the inputsand outputs to electric power stations was analyzed. Presented are the ways of limiting the magnetic component of the low frequency electromagnetic field on the side of the cable line approachingthe cable pole.

The article Experiences from exploitation of surge arrester counters presents experience from exploitation of surge arrester counters. There was documented destructive influence of humidity inside the untight surge arrester counter on its operation and ZnO varistors within. There were presented examinations of microstructure of varistors of damaged surge arrester counters. A point of reference was similar ZnO varistor, not subjected to operation before. Investigations revealed that material of varistors had an untypical phase composition and was characterized by unsatisfying homogeneity and cohesion. There were recognized and described the subsequent stages of the degradation processes of varistors material. Conclusions resulting from the operation checking of surge arrester counters were also presented.
