The Thermal Processes Department provides comprehensive measurement and research services supported by numerical modelling. Among others, the department offers the following services:

Measurements (warranty, operational, pre- and post-modernization) of boilers, mills and other power equipment:

  • measurements of flue gas temperature and gaseous emissions in flue gas ducts (NO, SO2, CO, O2, NH3) and in the wall layer,
  • temperature measurements in different sections of the combustion chamber,
  • boiler efficiency measurements
  • air leakage measurements of air heaters
  • measurements of coal mills to determine the uniformity of the carrier medium and dust distribution, to determine the quality of the milling and to carry out thermal balance calculations over the entire performance range.

Flame diagnostics:

  • determining the aerodynamic characteristics of the flame,
  • characterisation of fuel combustion processes depending on burner geometry, type of coal combusted and operating conditions.

Analysis of high-speed processes using a Phantom camera and specialised motion analysis software

The recording speed of the video with the maximum camera resolution of 1280 x 800 is 1,000 frames/sec and with reduced resolution up to 300,000 frames/sec. TEMA Motion software is dedicated to the analysis of high-speed sequential images. The algorithms used in the software allow the position, velocity, occupied area of objects recorded on the flm to be tracked.

Expert opinions on the technical and operational assessment of the operation of boilers and auxiliary equipment:

  • assessment of the possibility of reducing nitrogen oxide emissions using various methods (multi-stage combustion, new burner designs, OFA nozzles, selective non-catalytic reduction SNCR, selective catalytic reduction SCR),
  • evaluation of possibilities to reduce high temperature corrosion of combustion chamber walls under low emission combustion conditions,
  • assessment of causes and possibilities to reduce slagging of boiler heating surfaces,
  • assessment of the possibility of co-firing biomass in coal-fired power boilers.

Numerical modelling, mainly analysis of the operation of boilers and other energy equipment:

  • modelling the combustion process to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides,
  • modelling boiler operation to reduce slagging,
  • modelling of boiler operation to reduce high temperature corrosion phenomena,
  • conceptual studies of existing and new pulverised fuel boiler designs adapted for combustion of fragmented biomass,
  • modelling of the effects of flue gas quantity, composition and temperature on steam parameters in power boilers.

Analytical studies of solid fuels:

  • determination of moisture, ash, volatile parts, combustion heat and calorific value, combustible parts,
  • determination of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur content,
  • characterisation of ash melting,
  • characterisation of the degassing of fuels and reactivity of carbonisate.

Analytical testing of the products of the gasification process:

  • studies of the parameters of pyrolysis and gasification processes for different types of biomass,
  • determination of the composition of gas, dust, tars, H2S, HCl, water vapour using the Fisher method,

Analysis of the suitability of biofuels for energy production:

  • analysis of PAH compounds in solutions, e.g. tar samples,
  • leaching and chromatographic analysis of tars samples taken by SPA method.

Tests and measurements of the gasification process at the customer's installation:

  • gas composition testing and sampling, process balancing,
  • certified gasification plant balance measurements.

The Thermal Processes Department offers gasification reactors up to 1 MW, as well as the possibility to design and supply:

  • pulverised coal/biomass burners from 300 kW to 25 MW,
  • low-quality gas burners with a calorific value of 3.5 to 7 MJ/mu3 with a power of 100 kW to 20 MW, according to an original technical idea protected by Polish patent law.
