What is the Thermal Technology Branch “ITC”?

The Thermal Technology Branch “ITC” in Łódź has a rich seventy-five-year history - it is a continuation of the activities of the Institute of Power Engineering ITC in Łódź established in 1948. In 2008, the Institute was incorporated into the Institute of Power Engineering - National Research Institute and became the Thermal Technology Branch “ITC”. At present, ‘ITC’ carries out scientific research, development, implementation, service and production activities, as well as carrying out expert opinions and issuing opinions for the needs of the energy sector. The substantive activity of the Branch is carried out in the Centre for Innovative Energy Technologies (CITE) in the following Units:

  • ZBA - Acoustic Research Department,
  • ZTB - Biogas Technologies Department,
  • ZKT - Construction and Technology Department.

Our Units:

The Acoustic Testing team has specialised staff with many years of experience, top-quality testing equipment and a unique testing infrastructure, including a complex of acoustic chambers:

  • Two reverberation chambers
  • Anechoic chamber

When carrying out tests, it is possible to construct test stands for the individual needs of the facility.

The scope of work of the Acoustic Testing Team includes aeroacoustic testing of machines, fans, devices and ventilation system components for the needs of, among others:

  • Technical approvals,
  • National Technical Assessments
  • Vibro-acoustic diagnostics
  • Voluntary certification
  • Aerodynamic testing of ventilation plant components
  • Acoustic testing of machinery and equipment (motors, transformers, etc.)
  • Acoustic testing of materials for acoustic applications (in insulation, screens, silencers, etc.)

In the Biogas Technology Department, biogas plants and their components are designed and constructed ‘in metal’: collection stations, suction and pumping systems, suction-blowers, flares, biogas purification, drying and treatment systems. Examples include biogas utilisation facilities for municipal landfills.

The Construction and Technology Department specialises in the design, manufacture and production of, among other things:

  • steam exhaust noise dampers
  • acoustic enclosures and covers
  • ventilation units for trams
  • special-purpose fans (suction-blowers)
  • spray nozzles
  • test and measurement stands

It also provides workshop services in the field of:

  • machining
  • welding - aluminium, carbon steel, stainless steel,
  • sheet metal working - coiling of sheets.

The steam blast silencers manufactured at "ITC" IPE-NRI are characterised by high acoustic efficiency (from 25 to 50 dB), operational reliability and long service life. They are used downstream of steam or compressed air blowdown valvesThe most important parameters of the "ITC" IPE-designed steam blowdown silencers are:

  • Mass flow range - 2 to 475 t/h
  • Pressure range - from 0.10 to 16.20 MPa
  • Temperature range - from 105 to 545 °C
  • Muffler masses - from 30 to 2500 kg
  • Overall dimensions (diameter x length) - from 106 x 500 to 2500 x 4500 mm
  • Noise reduction - from 25 to 50 dB

The OTC IEN-PIB also has a Transformer Ladle Testing Laboratory. It performs fatigue testing of ladles in accordance with standards: 50588-1., PN-EN 50708-2-4:2023-06 or EN 50708-2-4:2022, The results are presented in a report having the approval of the Certification Body.

The branch cooperates with many universities and industrial units in Poland and abroad.
